Nordion Energi enables Swedish biogas at the Port of Gothenburg

St1 and St1 Biokraft have completed their first delivery of Swedish biogas produced in-house for shipping, via Nordion Energi’s bunkering facility at the Port of Gothenburg. The bunkering process was an important test for the facility, which together with Nordion Energi’s future liquefaction plant will create new opportunities for biogas producers to access the maritime market.

Bunkering took place in collaboration between St1, St1 Biokraft, the Port of Gothenburg, Nordion Energi and the shipping company Terntank. At the end of last year, Nordion Energi made an investment decision to build a biogas liquefaction plant at the Port of Gothenburg. One of the reasons was to make it easier for biogas producers to liquefy and access the maritime market via the gas grid.

“Our aim is to be a driving force in converting the gas grid to 100% renewable gas, and the liquefied biogas plant at the Port of Gothenburg has a key role to play in this. It will also help shipping operations, heavy transport providers and industrial users that are further away from the gas grid to make the transition,” says Carolina Wistén of Nordion Energi.

Biogas is a renewable fuel that can replace fossil fuels in a number of different sectors. As a leading biogas operator, St1 Biokraft has been an important partner in the project, and was the first operator to sign an agreement to secure part of the liquefaction plant’s capacity.

“When the liquefaction plant is completed, we’ll have a good solution in place at the Port of Gothenburg. It’s a strategic step towards our goal of upgrading and offering competitive liquefied biogas to the shipping industry and taking a leading position in this segment,” says Ted Gustavsson, Head of Value Chain at St1 Biokraft.

The plant is an important element of the Port’s objective to be a leading bunkering hub for renewable fuels in Northern Europe. Biogas will play an important role in achieving this goal.

“If it’s going to be possible to accelerate the transition of shipping, it’s a prerequisite that there are operators throughout the entire value chain who are pulling in the same direction and who can collaborate and translate ambitions into practice. We’re delighted to have all this in place at the Port,” says Therese Jällbrink, Head of Renewable Energy at the Port of Gothenburg.
