Nordion Energi acquires E.ON Sverige’s shares in Kalmar Energi, thereby entering into a partnership with Kalmar Municipality

Nordion Energi has today signed an agreement with E.ON Sverige to acquire E.ON’s shares in Kalmar Energi, corresponding to 50% of all shares in the company. Nordion Energi is thereby entering into a partnership with Kalmar Municipality to continue to develop Kalmar Energi together. The partnership covers electricity grids, district heating and fibre. Siljansvik will become a new co-owner of the electricity trading business together with the municipality.

"We believe in partnerships in which we, in close dialogue with the municipality, support the development of an active and competitive local community"

- Hans Kreisel, CEO Nordion Energi

“We are delighted to enter into this collaboration with Kalmar Municipality. Electricity grids, district heating and fibre constitute the basic infrastructure for a municipality to be able to grow and develop, and we look forward to being one of Kalmar Energi’s owners and helping to create good conditions for Kalmar,” says Hans Kreisel, CEO of Nordion Energi.

Nordion Energi operates in the field of energy infrastructure. The company currently consists of e.g. the electricity grid operator Falbygdens Energi and the electricity grid and fibre operator Dala Energi, which are owned jointly with the municipalities of Rättvik, Leksand and Gagnef, as well as Siljansvik. The company is also a leading operator of gas infrastructure and own and operates transmission grid operator Swedegas and distribution network Weum.

The electrification of society, digitalisation and contingency issues place increasing demands on local energy infrastructure. Nordion Energi’s ambition is to be the natural, long-term partner for municipalities that want to future-proof their energy supply.

“We believe in partnerships in which we, in close dialogue with the municipality, support the development of an active and competitive local community. Strong local roots and influence, as well as proximity to customers, are crucial for long-term trust and success. At the same time, an industrial partner provides access to broader competence, capital and economies of scale. We see this promoting the development of the local energy company – together, we are stronger,” says Hans Kreisel.

The Kalmar Energi Group supplies electricity, district heating, fibre and energy services to approximately 24,000 electricity trading customers, approximately 2,500 district heating customers and approximately 22,000 electricity grid customers. The business concept is to deliver a simple and sustainable energy experience in the Kalmar region, and the vision is to jointly create the conditions for building and securing an innovative, accessible and sustainable Kalmar.

“We see a need for investments to secure Kalmar’s energy supply in the long term and encourage more companies to establish themselves in the region. Nordion Energi contributes both expertise and sustainable financing opportunities. We share a long-term perspective with a clear focus on continuing to develop the business with a focus on customers, social responsibility, sustainability and future investments,” says Anna Karlsson, CEO of Kalmar Energi.

“We welcome Nordion Energi as a new partner in the area of electricity grids, district heating and fibre. We are proud to have a well-managed energy company that supports development in the municipality. With a new owner, we can continue to develop the company to create the right conditions into the future as well. Kalmar Municipality is also prepared for the opportunity to increase its ownership in the electricity trading business, with Siljansvik as a new, long-term co-owner. This does not change anything for Kalmar Energi’s customers; the business will continue to be run under the same brand,” says Ulrick Hultman, CEO of Kalmar Kommunbolag AB.

The transaction is subject to adoption by the municipal council and the usual government agency approvals. The process is expected to be completed after the summer.
