Nordion Energi attends the Government’s national climate summit

Today we are attending the Swedish Government’s national climate summit. To make the net zero vision a reality, Sweden’s energy system must undergo major changes.

In round table discussions during the past year, we have highlighted five areas to the Government:

  1. Large-scale biogas production. In order to continue the positive trend in the use of biogas, the Government needs to restore tax exemption.
  2. Hydrogen will be crucial for the industrial sector’s transition, but Sweden currently lacks a hydrogen infrastructure. The Nordic Hydrogen Route is one of our hydrogen initiatives that will make the green transition possible around the Gulf of Bothnia – as early as 2030. We are calling on the Government to prioritise regulatory and licensing issues and to give our hydrogen projects their explicit support, so that the EU Commission will approve the PCI (Projects of Common Interest) applications.
  3. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been identified by the IPCC and the EU as a necessary measure to achieve the climate goals. We are involved in running CinfraCap at the Port of Gothenburg, which is expected to be able to store 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, corresponding to 75% of emissions from domestic transport operations in the Västra Götaland region.
  4. Liquefied biogas can make a difference for heavy road transport and shipping – right now. We are involved in running a project at the Port of Gothenburg in which biogas is converted into liquefied biogas. We are calling on the Government to draw up a biogas strategy, so that industries, producers and investors have the confidence to invest in the long term.
  5. Collaborative planning of gas and electricity grids. Northern Sweden is in great need of increased energy generation in the coming years. There are, for example, clear synergies between hydrogen infrastructure and electricity grids.
