RES and Nordion Energi investigating conditions for new Alby/Ljungaverk – Sundsvall hydrogen pipeline

RES and Nordion Energi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Together, they will conduct a preliminary study on the development, design and operation of a pipeline from Alby and Ljungaverk to Sundsvall – to enable the transport of green hydrogen through Sweden.

The MoU marks the start of a new collaboration between RES, the world’s largest independent actor in the field of renewable energy, and Nordion Energi, a leading developer of infrastructure and climate-neutral gas distribution. The preliminary study will investigate the conditions for a potential hydrogen pipeline from Alby and Ljungaverk, where RES is currently developing two large-scale hydrogen plants, to Sundsvall.

Alexandra Angelbratt, Head of Hydrogen at RES, observes: “Green hydrogen is a key factor in enabling the industrial sector’s energy transition. RES is developing two plants in Ånge Municipality, in Alby and Ljungaverk, which will produce 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for various recipients. Together with Nordion Energi, we’re now initiating a preliminary study to investigate the possibility of transporting hydrogen. We’re proud and delighted to be working with Nordion Energi on this project, and to make the necessary infrastructure available to accelerate the introduction of green hydrogen as a key player in the Nordic energy mix.”

For some years now, Nordion Energi has been developing a new infrastructure to transport hydrogen that is open for all hydrogen producers and consumers in the Nordic region, initially in northern Sweden, to connect to.

Björn Santana Arvidsson, Head of Hydrogen at Nordion Energi, comments: “Nordion Energi is involved in numerous large-scale hydrogen infrastructure projects in the northern parts of Sweden. The increased use of hydrogen will be crucial for the transition to green industry and a sustainable transport sector – but at present Sweden lacks the infrastructure needed. Our pipelines are buried underground and therefore have minimal impact on nature. The gas can either be used immediately or stored for later use. Ånge Municipality is ideally situated close to Sundsvall and the Baltic Sea, where many industrial customers are located. We’re delighted to be working together with RES, a well-established renewable energy company in the region, with a common and clear goal of increasing the production of green hydrogen in the energy mix.”

The preliminary study will start immediately, and will provide basic information as a basis for the future feasibility of a hydrogen pipeline from Alby and Ljungaverk to Sundsvall.

Alexandra Angelbratt adds: “We consider it very important to meet the increased demand and need for green energy from both industry and society at large. Collaborations like this are important to ensure the seamless transport of hydrogen over long distances, unlocking its full potential as a versatile carrier of green energy. By implementing a pipeline, RES and Nordion Energi will together contribute to a more resilient and sustainable energy system, and offer a reliable and scalable solution for the storage and transport of green hydrogen.”
